Rare earth elements are a group of seventeen chemical elements that occur together in the periodic table (see image). The group consists of yttrium and the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium).
The detailed process flow chart is shown in Fig. 2. The concentration of Li and F in the washing solution was detected to calculate the leaching efficiency of Li and F. The leaching efficiency of rare earth, fluorine, and lithium in the slag was calculated based on changes of the concentration in the leaching solution using the following Eq.
For every ton of rare earth produced, the mining process yields 13kg of dust, 9,600-12,000 cubic meters of waste gas, 75 cubic meters of wastewater, and one ton of radioactive residue. This stems from the fact that rare earth element ores have metals that, when mixed with leaching pond chemicals, contaminate air, water, and soil.
Rare Earths Statistics and Information. Statistics and information on the worldwide supply of, demand for, and flow of the mineral commodity group rare earths - scandium, yttrium, and the lanthanides. The principal economic sources of rare earths are the minerals bastnasite, monazite, and loparite and the lateritic ion-adsorption clays.

In the ecoinvent process "Rare earth concentrate 70%, from bastnäsite, at beneficiation (CN)" provided by Althaus, the sum of flotation chemicals (1.2 kg/kg REO) is the largest. Reason is an additional HCl leaching process during flotation. The HCl accounts for 82% of the total flotation chemicals.
Present review reports the commercial processes based on pyro–hydro or hybrid techniques as well as systematic research for process development to recover rare earth from monazite. The salient ...
Membrane strategies for rare earths separation were summarized. The related technologies include several types of liquid membranes and non-liquid membranes. Rare earths transport features, transport principle, membrane stability and transport apparatus were discussed in details. Nanocomposite membrane and metal-organic …
As an illustration, Zhang & Honaker (2020) generated a product containing around 98 wt% rare earth oxides from AMD water by applying hydrometallurgical processes. Vass used AMD treatment sludge and produced a bench-scale process that could produce mixed rare earth oxide with an REO purity exceeding 60% (Vass, 2019c).
Rare earth ore gravity separation process is based on the difference in density between rare earth minerals and gangue minerals. It is mainly aimed at the separation of rare earth minerals and gangue minerals such as quartz and calcite with low density. For example, the beach sand ore mostly uses the gravity separation method, or the ...

Chloride solutions of mixed rare earths were obtained for further separation of individual rare earths. The flowchart of this process is shown in Fig. 29. Because the impurity sulfates are gradually decomposed into insoluble substances at high temperature, the amount of the impurities in the leachate was greatly reduced.
Rare earth elements have unique physicochemical properties that make them essential elements in many high-tech components. Bastnesite (La, Ce)FCO 3, monazite, (Ce, La, Y, Th)PO 4, and xenotime, YPO 4, are the main commercial sources of rare earths.Rare earth minerals are usually beneficiated by flotation or gravity or magnetic …
management of radioactivity in rare earth process flowsheets. We have produced a range of separated light rare earth oxide (La, Ce, Nd, Nd/Pr) and mixed middle and heavy rare earth concentrates using solvent extraction. Product purities ranging from 99% (2N) to 99.9% (3N) have been produced for several of our clients. This work has allowed us to
The escalating demand of rare earth metals (REMs) in various applications and their continuous depleting ores have laid emphasis to produce metals from their complex resources by developing energy efficient and eco-friendly processes. Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain a sufficient amount of rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed elements associated with clays, and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix or host mineral. Researchers at three universities …
The process used to generate the REE-enriched precipitate and perform the re-dissolution experiments is depicted in the flow diagram in Fig. 1. First, a 10 L volume of acid mine drainage was treated with 5 M NaOH solution to increase the solution pH to 4.56, which precipitated a significant portion of the ferric ions. ...
