Sodium dodecyl sulfate is a surfactant. It has been used as a corrosion inhibitor in controlling corrosion of mild steel in aqueous solution containing 60 ppm of Cl −. Mild steel was immersed in 600 ppm of SDS solution in the presence of 60 ppm of Cl −. Corrosion rates were measured in the presence and absence of inhibitor.

Order high-quality Sodium dodecyl sulfate, an ionic detergent from Sigma-Aldrich, ideal for protein denaturation in cell biology and biochemical research.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a conventional anionic surfactant. An amphiphilic surfactant consists of polar hydrophilic head groups and non-polar hydrophobic tail groups. Surfactants are characterized by their ability to form micelles, i.e., their ability to self-aggregate above a critical micelle concentration (CMC).

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sometimes written sodium laurilsulfate, is an organic compound with the formula CH3(CH2)11OSO3Na and structure H3C−(CH2)11−O−S(=O)2−O−Na+. It is an anionic surfactant used in many cleaning and hygiene products. This compound is the sodium salt of the 12-carbon organosulfate.
The molecular structure of sodium alkyl sulfate (AS) is shown in Fig. 33.1. AS having a hydrophobic dodecyl group is called sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). It is easily produced from fatty alcohol. Because AS has good chemical stability, it can be used over a wide range of pH values.
